Chelsea’s attempts to move on Ben Chilwell this month are being frustrated because the left-back is refusing to take a pay cut.

It has long been clear that Chilwell is not in Enzo Maresca’s plans at Stamford Bridge.

He has just one senior appearance, in the EFL Cup, this season, and he has spent most of the time training with the “bomb squad”.

Having failed to find a buyer for him in the summer, they are now prepared to listen to almost every offer for him now. Chilwell, though, is not prepared to give up his lucrative ₤190,000 a week contract without a fight, and given that he still has more than two years left on his current deal, Chelsea have a choice.

Reach a financial agreement with him that would involve a substantial payout, or allow him to keep drawing his wages without playing for them (something that they have a history of under previous regimes).
