Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda has died aged 30 following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during Monday’s Spanish second division match.
His club announced that he died on Tuesday morning, leaving his family, teammates, and supporters mourning a player whose life ended after a routine league fixture turned into a medical emergency.
De Miguel collapsed after Owono rushed forward to challenge for a long ball, striking the forward in the chest with his knee. Medical staff treated him on the pitch before an ambulance took him to hospital. The match was abandoned during stoppage time, with the teams level at 2–2.
The striker suffered a cardiac arrest and was admitted to intensive care at the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. Tenerife initially described his condition as stable but serious, before announcing overnight that his neurological condition had deteriorated. Confirmation of his death followed a few hours later.
The game took place at Tenerife’s Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands, off the north-west coast of Africa. Andorra, owned by former Barcelona and Spain defender Gerard Piqué through his Kosmos investment group, compete in the Spanish league system despite being based in the independent Pyrenean principality.
Fatal incidents during professional matches are rare, but football has experienced several prominent cases.
In Spain, Sevilla’s Antonio Puerta died aged 22 in August 2007, three days after collapsing during a league match against Getafe. Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foé died after collapsing during the 2003 Confederations Cup, while Benfica’s Miklós Fehér died following a collapse during a Portuguese league match in January 2004.
A closer parallel in its sequence of events occurred in India in December 2004, when Dempo striker Cristiano Júnior collapsed after a collision with Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Pal during the Federation Cup final. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital, although the collision alone did not establish the medical cause.
