Arsenal’s inactivity in the transfer market has provoked a predictable backlash from a section of their fan base.
And yet again calls for the club to buy a new striker went unheeded, despite tha fact that they knew they would be without Bukayo Saka for months before the window opened, and then lost Gabriel Jesus to a long-term injury soon afterwards.
The club did make a well below market offer for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, but must have known that would be rejected.
In their defence January is a notoriously difficult window in which to buy, and, with none of their top targets available, the decision has been made to wait until the summer when things should be easier.
Nevertheless, it is a calculated gamble to rely on their existing squad for the rest of the season, and if the Gunners fail to achieve any of their major targets, this will be viewed by some as a missed opportunity.
