Chelsea go into their final Premier League game of the season against Nottingham Forest knowing that Champions League qualification is in their own hands.
Win and they are guaranteed a place in the competition next season, irrespective of what happens elsewhere. And whilst the size of the task in front of them should not be underestimated – they have not won outside London since December, so is the prize.
Because whilst the club is still expected to be active in the transfer market, regardless of the result, the calibre of player they will be able to attract to Stamford Bridge will be much greater. Already there are talks that they are looking for a new striker, winger, centre-back and goalkeeper, and that is without brining in reinforcements in other positions.
It would also be an affirmation of the leadership of Enzo Maresca who has been told that hs job is safe, even if they miss out on the Champions League this time.
