The final fee that Arsenal paid Sporting for Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres in the summer has now been revealed.
It follows the publication of the annual accounts for the Portuguese club which details that the Gunners paid a guarantee sum of ₤57.9 million for the 27-year old, with a further ₤9.04 million in performance-related bonuses.
That was less than was reported in some media outlets at the time, with Sporting president Frederico Varandas playing hardball, at least in public, in his attempts to get the best possible price for the forward.
Arsenal already believe that they got a good deal for Gyökeres, who has scored six goals in 15 appearances for them. He has also helped to make them a more direct side in attack, with his muscular presence and willingness to stretch defenders opening up space for others to exploit. Under FIFA’s solidarity rules, the club where he began his career IFK Aspudden-Tellus will receive 1% of the fee, a significant windfall for the small Stockholm-based team.
