Given that Chelsea are already replete with wingers, it may be thought that they hardly need another one. Already this summer Jamie Gittens has been signed from Borussia Dortmund whilst Estêvão Willian will join the club after he has recovered from his World Club Cup exertions with Palmeiras.
However, that has not stopped them from a move for Crystal Palace Jesse Derry, who they have now agreed to sign.
18-year old Derry was a player much in demand. Chelsea have beaten at least eight other clubs to his signature. Although highly-rated, he had yet to break into the senior Palace squad, and he turned down the offer of a new deal at Crystal Palace.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Derry, given that there are so many youngsters at Chelsea, who have yet to break into the senior side. A spell on loan would be one option, or he could feature for one of the academy sides.
