The two main owners of Chelsea, Clearwater Capital and Todd Boehly, are reported to be examining their options and the possibility of buying each other out.

Relations between Clearwater, led by Behdad Eghbali and Boehly are reported to have deteriorated since they joined together to buy the club in May 2022, with one of the key differences of opinion being the team’s being the team’s transfer policy.

They are also disagree when it comes to the team’s relative underperformance under their stewardship, and the lack of progress when it comes to a new stadium.

As the balance of power lies with Clearwater – they own 62% of the shares as opposed to just 13% of the rest – they are likely to be the winners of any boardroom battle, with the key issue more how much they are willing to pay for Boehly’s shares.

At the same time, Clearwater Capital remains committed to their ownership of the club, which may disappoint the substantial groups of supporters who would prefer them gone, disenchanted by the transfer policy and the marginalisation of academy players.
