Two damaging home cup defeats in a week, first in the Carabao Cup to Newcastle United, and now in the FA Cup to Manchester United, have exposed the deficiencies in Arsenal’s recent transfer strategy.

In both cases, the Gunners were left to rue not have a clinical striker in their team, and how much they missed the injured Bukayo Saka.

And the sight of Gabriel Jesus leaving the pitch on a stretcher in the first half of the United game suggests that he could be in for a long lay-off, further exacerbating the club’s goal scoring problems, and which could derail even further their hopes of still mounting a title challenge.

Yet, when asked about the situation in the post-match press conference, Mikel Arteta did not seem to imply there would be any additions in the forward areas in January, leading some to believe that the board are not prepared to make the money available.
