Martin Zubímendi’s performance in the Nations League final for Spain whetted the appetite for Arsenal fans hoping to see him play for the Gunners next season.
Although he finished on the losing side, he was one of the best performers on the pitch, and even scored the opening goal.
However, his much heralded transfer to North London appeared in doubt after the match, with reports appearing in the Spanish media speculating that Real Madrid were about to hijack the deal to sign him.
Now it appears, though, that those stories were planted by pro-Real journalists, and that, although the Spanish giants are long admirers of the player, they are not actively working on recruiting him.
And whilst the longer the move is announced, the more the possibility of something going wrong, Arsenal regard the transfer as done and dusted, and that the wait is due to Real Sociedad wanting to announce it in their new accounting period, which begins on July 1st.
