A Norwegian football fan has become an unlikely internet sensation after refusing to take part in the country’s now-famous “Viking Row” celebration during the World Cup. While thousands of supporters around him enthusiastically mimicked rowing a Viking longship in the stands, one man remains seated with his arms folded.
The fan, Emil Lappen, has explained that his decision is not a spontaneous act of defiance but a long-held personal opinion. He described the celebration as “stupid and annoying,” saying he has never understood why so many Norwegian supporters embrace it. Although the Viking Row has become one of the tournament’s most recognisable fan traditions, Lappen insists he has no intention of joining in, regardless of how well Norway performs.
Lappen has questioned the historical accuracy of the celebration. He argued that Vikings were renowned sailors who relied primarily on sails during long voyages rather than continuously rowing across the seas. For that reason, he believes the repeated “Row, Row, Row” chant paints an inaccurate picture of Viking history.
Ironically, the viral moment has sparked a broader discussion about the celebration itself. Historians have pointed out that while Lappen is correct that Viking longships were designed to use sails whenever possible, they also carried oars and crews regularly rowed when navigating rivers, entering harbours, sailing in calm weather, or manoeuvering during battles. As a result, experts say the Viking Row may not be perfectly accurate, but it is not entirely without historical basis either.
Despite the debate, the Viking Row continues to unite Norwegian supporters, who see it as a fun and energetic way to celebrate their team’s success. As for Lappen, he appears content to remain the lone spectator sitting still while an entire stadium rows around him.
