Whilst Tottenham’s victory over Everton was enough to keep them in the Premier League for another season, there are no reasons for their fans to celebrate.
This is a club that still considers themselves one of the biggest clubs in England, but two successive 17th place finishes do not marry with those aspirations.
Instead, there is enormous work to do on and off the field to ensure they do not find themselves in the same position next season.
One thing the club’s executive did get right was the decision, after the disastrous interim reign of Igor Tudor was to persuade Roberto de Zerbi to accept the position of manager.
But now the Italian needs to be backed in the transfer market, and he must also be ruthless in getting rid of some of the dead wood at the club.
And whilst Tottenham fans may not want to hear it, there are lessons to be learned from neighbours London, not least in how to build s relationship between a team and its fans which has often seen broken this season.
If firm action is not taken this summer, they could find themselves in exactly the same position next season.
