Giroud signs contract extension

Olivier Giroud has signed a one year contract extension at Chelsea.

The Frenchman’s current deal at Stamford Bridge was due to expire at the end of June, after which date he would have been a free agent, but now the club have exercised an option in his contract, extending his stay with them by a further 12 months.

The French World Cup winner came close to leaving Chelsea in January, and, if they had managed to find a suitable replacement, might have been allowed to do so.

However, having been on periphery of the action for much of the season, he belatedly got his chance with Tammy Abraham picked up and injury, and was back amongst the goals again before the season was halted because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Speculation had continued to link him with moves this summer, with both Inter Milan and Spurs reputed to be interested. Now though all that is at an end, with the club’s Managing Director Marina Granovskaia saying “he is a proven trophy winner who we hope can help our next generation to become that too”.
