New Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has identified former midfielder Barry Bannan as one of his top transfer targets for January.
The former Villa academy player made 83 appearances for the club between 2008 and 2013 before when he moved to Crystal Palace on a 3 –year deal. His spell in South London though, was not a happy one, and he ended-up on loan with Bolton Wanderers before discovering his form at Sheffield Wednesday, where he has since flourished.
The Scottish international was renowned as an attacking midfielder during his first time at Villa Park, but now has adopted a deeper-lying role which has made him one of the best players in his position in the Championship.
Bannan only signed a new three-year deal with Wednesday in August, but with a potential £8 million bid from Villa reportedly in the offing, their resolve to keep hold of the 28-year old Scot may be fully tested when the transfer window opens again.
