Manchester United have remained coy in terms of deciding who their next manager should be, even though they appear to have the ideal candidate already in situ.
When Ruben Amorim was sacked in January, and Michael Carrick was appointed as caretaker manager, the club were sixth in the League, and already out of both domestic cups, and with no European football this season.
Since then the 44-year old has guided them to a guaranteed third place finish in the league, which means that after a three year absence, United will be back in the Champions League next season. That will be a substantial boost to the club’s coffers.
It can be argued that United in this period have benefitted from playing less games than some of their rivals – they are set to have played 23 games less than Arsenal by the end of this season.
But it would also be difficult to contend that Carrick could have done more with the resources available to him.
He may not be as high profile a candidate as some of those who will potentially be on the market this summer, but as an ex-player he understands the culture of Old Trafford better than most, and that counts a lot in modern football.
