He has contributed little on the pitch, scoring just one goal, whilst his inclusion in the playing squad has robbed younger players of minutes that they might have got.
And his liking at the weekend of a social media post about Chelsea’s win at the Emirates indicates that he has never really switched his allegiance.
The Gunners may have to facilitate the deal by paying him most of what he is owed, and any transfer fee they can expect will be minimal at best.
However, it will get his wages off the books and help draw a line under what has been one of the club’s biggest transfer mistakes – and there have been a few – in recent years.
