American billionaire wants to buy Chelsea

American billionaire Todd Boehly wants to buy Chelsea, despite the club insisting that current owner Roman Abramovich is not interested in selling it.

Part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, Boehly is in the market to buy a Premier League club, and has made Chelsea his top target, having been part of a consortium that tried, and failed, to acquire Tottenham Hotspur five years ago.

Senior sources at the club have reiterated Abramovich’s commitment to Chelsea, and determination to continue his ownership, but Boehly, who is reported to value the club as high as £3 billion, is prepared to wait, and believes that the Russian might still be tempted by the right offer.

A potential crunch point could come in March when the planning deadline for the proposed expansion of Stamford Bridge is set to expire. If that deadline passes without Abramovich, who had shelved the project after he ran into visa problems with the UK authorities, giving any indication that it is likely to be revived, then it will give encouragement to Boehly, and others, hoping to buy the team.
