Watford closing on deal for French teenage midfielder

Watford are said to be closing in on a deal to sign midfielder Pape Gueye from French Ligue 2 side Le Havre.

Born in France but of Senagelese descent, the 19-year old made his debut in a goalless draw with Chamois Niortais, signing his first professional contract a month later. However, he made only one further appearance for Le Havre last season, despite regularly featuring for both the French under-18 and under-19 international squads.

Despite this lack of senior appearances, Watford have not been deterred in their pursuit of him, with L’Equipe reporting that the Hornets are close to agreeing a deal for his signature, although a fee has to be agreed between the two clubs.

If a deal for Gueye is concluded, the Frenchman will become Watford’s fourth signing of the summer, following Ben Wilmot from Stevenage, winger Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona, and full-back Marc Navarro, who joined from Espanyol ten days ago.
