Although the January transfer window opens on January 1st and will not close until February 3rd, any hopes that Arsenal fans will be active in it are unlikely to be realised.
In the past, players like Andrei Arshavin and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have been signed in January, but traditionally the club does not do much business then because bargains are hard to come by.
And that also means there is little hope of a new striker arriving, especially now Gabriel Jesus seems to have rediscovered his form in front of goal. And, whilst the news that Bukayo Saka could be missing for several weeks after suffering a recurrence of his hamstring injury against Crystal Palace, finding anybody to replace him at such short notice is a tall order.
There are also suggestions that the club might be constrained financially by the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules. And whilst loans are a possibility, especially following the injury to Saka, they will have to come from abroad. There is a maximum quota of two from other Premier League clubs, and the Gunners already have that in the form of Raheem Sterling and goalkeeper Neto.
Instead, any movements are likely to be outgoings, with Kiernan Tierney linked with a return to Celtic, whilst a number of fringe players may be sent out on loan.
