Every great football nation is defined by its generations, and for Brazil, the latest chapter has come to an end.
With Brazil’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it feels like the end of the Neymar generation.
For more than a decade, Neymar was the face of Brazilian football. He became the nation’s all-time leading goalscorer, dazzled fans with his talent and carried the hopes of a country desperate to reclaim football’s biggest prize. But despite the brilliance, the World Cup always remained out of reach.
From the heartbreak of 2014, when injury ruled Neymar out before Brazil’s infamous semi-final defeat, to quarter-final exits in 2018 and 2022, and now another disappointment in 2026, this generation will be remembered as one of Brazil’s most talented—but one that never lifted the trophy that matters most.
That should not overshadow what they achieved. Brazil remained among the world’s elite throughout Neymar’s international career, consistently competing at the highest level and producing unforgettable moments.
But football always moves on to the next iteration.
With Neymar and many of his teammates nearing the end of their international journeys, the responsibility now passes to a new generation. Brazil’s tradition of producing world-class talent will continue, but the next chapter will belong to different faces and different leaders.
For Neymar’s generation, the story ends with admiration, heartbreak and one lingering “what if.” It was perhaps fitting that his last contribution in a Brazil shirt was to score the penalty which was only ever a consolation against Norway.
The era is over. A new one begins.
