Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has emerged as a potential January target for Barcelona.

The Catalans find themselves depleted at the back with both Samuel Umtiti and Thomas Vermaelen sidelined by injury, leaving only Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet as their only senior options in central defence.

With Umtiti set for an extended absence with a knee injury, Vermaelen likely to miss at least 6 weeks, and with Pique becoming increasingly error prone, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde is looking desperately for reinforcements, and, according to Mundo Deportivo, 29 year old Lovren is one name being considered.

Lovren got to the World Cup finals with Croatia in the summer, but has struggled to find his way back into the Liverpool team this season, with both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk, who are in excellent form, ahead in the current pecking order at Anfield. Before the international break, he made his first Premier League appearance of the season in Liverpool’s rather sterile goalless draw with Manchester City.
