Ferran Torres has just scored the winning goal in a World Cup final for Spain. Yet despite reaching the biggest moment of his career, his future at Barcelona is far from certain.
There is an obvious comparison with Mario Götze. Like Torres, the German came off the bench to score the winning goal against Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final. He had already established himself as one of Europe’s most promising young players, but the years that followed did not match the expectations created by that extraordinary moment. Injuries and illness disrupted his career, while moves between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund failed to produce the sustained success many expected.
Torres will be hoping that his story has a different outcome. After all, Robert Lewandowski has left Barcelona for the MLS, creating a vacancy at centre-forward. Torres would appear to be a natural candidate to fill it after an impressive season.
However, the club is also interested in signing Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid (even though Atlético have made it clear they do not want to sell him to a Spanish rival).
That interest could be significant for Torres. Barcelona do not currently want to sell him, but they have yet to make it clear that he will be their first-choice striker. Torres is also entering the final year of his contract in 2027, meaning Barcelona must decide whether to offer him a new deal.
Torres reportedly feels he has not always received the recognition he deserves at Barcelona, while interest from Paris Saint-Germain has provided another potential destination. He has also refused to rule out a move, saying that “in football, you never know”.
For now, Barcelona want to keep him. But the pursuit of Álvarez suggests they are still looking for a new focal point for their attack.
That leaves Torres in an unusual position. He has just become a World Cup final match-winner for Spain, but he still has to convince Barcelona that he should be the man leading their attack.
