To the surprise of almost nobody, Fiorentino Pérez has been re-elected as President of Real Madrid.
The 79-year-old found himself in the unusual position of facing a challenger, with Enrique Riquelme, a renewable energy entrepreneur, standing against him.
But in the end Pérez received 65% of votes from the socios (members), despite Riquelme’s offer to pay their fees for life and to sign Erling Haaland for the club.
Pérez had made his own fair share of election promises, including a pledge to sign a mysterious €130 million player, with speculation that either Michael Olise of Bayern Munich or PSG’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were who he had in mind.
What is certain is that José Mourinho is set to return as head coach. The 63-year-old had already agreed a three-year deal to take over once more, and the announcement was just waiting on confirmation of Pérez’s re-election.
