In a dramatic turn of events, Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Crystal Palace forward Eberechi Eze, stealing him away from North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The Gunners had looked at signing Eze earlier in the window, but he became less of a priority once Ethan Nwaneri signed a new deal.

All that changed with the news that Kai Havertz had picked up a knee injury.

The extent of the injury has not been specified, nor is it clear how long he will be side-lined, but this is a significant blow for a player who already missed much of the second half of last season with a hamstring injury sustained during a training camp in Dubai in January.

And that prompted a hasty rethink by the Gunners who realised that they needed to go back into the transfer market, and they reacted with lightening speed.

Tottenham thought they had a deal in place to sign Eze, but were still haggling over some of the finer details, and that gave Arsenal their opportunity.

They agreed to pay the ₤60 million fee in faster instalments and with better performance related bonuses.

Eze, who had been part of the Arsenal academy until he was released at the age of 13, and remains a fan of the club, had always preferred a move to the Gunners and now he has got his wish.
