Colwill injury blow changes Chelsea plans

Chelsea have suffered a significant blow with the news that defender Levi Colwill has suffered a cruciate ACL season and will miss most of the season.

He picked up the injury in the first training session after the summer break and could now be out for nine months. For Colwill it is devastating because it could also affect his chances of bring involved in England’s World Cup squad next summer.

And that means that they may need to recruit a new centre-back, and whilst they could turned to Renata Veiga the Portuguese international remains up for sale. New recruit Jorrel Hato is an option, but he is considered primarily a left-back.

However, given the pressure Chelsea are under from UEFA to show a positive balance on their summer transfer dealings, buying somebody may not be a realistic solution at this stage.

Instead internal discussions have been held about bringing in somebody on loan, although no targets have been formally identified.
