Chelsea have been fined ₤26.7 million by UEFA and also been given an ultimatum.
They will not be allowed to register players eligible to play in European competitions next season unless they can show a positive transfer balance at the end of the window,
And they face a further fine of ₤51.2 million if they do not comply with the rules in the next four years.
Aston Villa have also been fined, but not to the same extent.
The sanctions relate to UEFA’s rules on earnings, and transactions, which whilst allowed under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, are not permitted under UEFA’s narrower definition of allowable deals.
In Chelsea’s case, UEFA took exception to the sale of their women’s team to a separate entity controlled by their parent company, and also to the sale of two hotels to a sister corporate entity.
Chelsea have indicated that they intend to comply, maintaining that they value their relationship with UEFA.
