City seek FIFA extension to transfer deadline

Manchester City are to request special dispensation from FIFA so that they can sign José Giménez from Atlétio Madrid.

The 25-year old Uruguayan international is currently self-isolating in Spain for a two-week period after testing positive for the coronavirus.

This means that he will not be able to complete a medical with the Premier League club prior to the international transfer deadline day which is October 5th. To get round this, the Premier League side have requested FIFA if they can make an exception in this case, given the unusual circumstances involved.

Giménez reported feeling unwell during a training session on Monday, and when he subsequently took a test it was confirmed that he had contracted the virus.

There are no guarantees that FIFA will accede to City’s request. They are reluctant to set a precedent and they also might argue that City have transfer alternatives to Giménez they could sign instead.
