Arsenal links to Spanish midfielder strengthen

Arsenal’s links with a move for Real Sociedad Martin Zubimendi have strengthened with news that they may be the only serious bidder for his services.

The Gunners are keen to move on from Thomas Partey, with the Ghanian’s injury record since he has been in North London a growing concern.

Although they have been watching a number of defensive midfielders, including Everton’s Amadou Onana and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, Zubimendi has been on their radar for some time, and he will not come with the “Premier League” tax associated with the other two.

However, he will not come cheap, and Sociedad will not allow him to leave unless somebody triggers his ₤51 million release clause.

That seems to have scared off both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, who were also interested in signing him, giving the Gunners potentially a clear run should they decide to turn their interest in him into a concrete offer.
