Defender set for Chelsea medical

Defender Renato Veiga is set to undergo a medical at Chelsea in the next few days and it is expected that he will be confirmed as a new player by the end of this week.

Swiss side Basel are set to receive a fee of ₤12.2 million for his services, with Veiga ready to sign a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge until 2032.

He will add options to Chelsea at the back, because he can olay in virtually every defensive position.

Chelsea had been interested in signing Italian international Riccardo Califiori from Bologna, but pivoted to Veiga instead, with Calafiori making it clear that his preference was to join their London rivals Arsenal instead.

Veiga began his career with Sporting Lisbon, and then had a loan spell with Bundesliga side Augsburg before his move to Basel.

He has won five caps for Portugal at under-21 level.
