The summer transfer window

This year’s summer transfer window will open on June 14th, which is the same day as the Euros begin with Germany taking on Scotland in Munich.

It will close on August 30th, slightly earlier than usual, meaning clubs have a total of 78 days to get all their business done for the new season.

Unlike previous years, the transfer window dates are aligned across most of the major leagues in Europe, although there continue to be outliers like Portugal, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, June 30th will see many contracts end and players become free agents. And a number of release clauses are timed to end then as well.

In reality, a number of transfers are already agreed, whilst intense discussions are being held with players, and agents.

There is a preference for clubs to get some of their business done early this year because of the Euros and Copa América. Players will not want to be distracted by transfer talk whilst they are away with their countries, and would prefer to have their future settled before then.
