Chelsea in McKenna discussions

Chelsea are in discussions with Kieron McKenna about becoming their new manager.

The position is open after they unexpectedly parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino earlier this week.

The 52 year old Argentine in his one season in charge at Stamford bridge had guided them to the League Cup final and a sixth placed finish in the Premier League, but that was not enough for the club’s ambitious owners.

McKenna’s stock is high after guiding Ipswich Town to back-to-back promotions, and they will pay in the Premier League for the first time in more than 20 years next season.

He has been offered a new contract by the East Anglian club but has turned it down, and has been linked with several other high profile jobs, including the vacant Brighton position.

Given the way that Chelsea hire and fire managers means that the job may be a poisoned chalice, but the chance to manage such a big club may be too great an opportunity to turn down.
