Chelsea get ₤5 million Hazard bonus

Despite the fact that Eden Hazard retired from football last October, and left Chelsea for Real Madrid in 2019, the Premier League club are still benefitting from him.

That is because his original sale to the Spanish club contained a number of performance-related clauses, several of which remain active despite the fact that he is no longer playing.

That is because the agreement between Real Madrid and Chelsea is still considered valid, and the fact that they have reached the Champions League final – they play Borussia Dortmund on June 1st at Wembley – has triggered one of them.

It is reported that an additional payment of ₤5 million is now due, something which is very welcome to Chelsea as it will count as pure profit.

Hazard agreed to terminate his Real contract last summer after his time in Spain saw his appearances severely limited by injury. A few months later, at the age of 32, he hung up his boots for good.
