Chelsea trigger contract extensions for duo

Chelsea have triggered contract extensions for the pair of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk.

The pair moved to Stamford Bridge in January of last year for large sums, and were already on lengthy contracts. Mudryk signed a deal that extends until the end of the 2031 season, whilst Fernandes agreed to stay for a year beyond that.

The news will surprise those Chelsea fans who might argue that both players have failed to justify their enormous price tags – Mudryk cost ₤97 million and Fernandez a British record ₤107 million at the time.

There have also been suggestions that Chelsea might be prepared to let at least one of them leave in the summer, with Mudryk the more likely of the pair to depart.

That now seems less probable, and whilst handing out contract extensions helps protect their value, it can also make it more difficult, in the long run, to get either of them off the books.
