London duo match offers for Sporting defender

Arsenal and Chelsea have prepared matching offers as they bid to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande.

The 20 year old, who is a full Ivory Coast international, currently plays for Sporting Lisbon, and has been one of the stand-out performers in the Portuguese league this season.

That has inevitably attracted interest from other European clubs, and both Bayern Munich and Newcastle United have been tracking his situation.

Chelsea, though, made the first concrete move, offering ₤51 million for the defender, plus bonuses.

That, though, has now been matched by their London rivals, with Mikel Arteta looking to further strengthen his defence ahead of the next campaign.

Neither offer may be enough to secure his signature, however. Sporting value him at closer to ₤70 million and, with Diomande being under contract until 2027, they are under no imeediate pressure to sell him now.

That being said, money often talks when it comes to Portuguese clubs.
