FFP looms over Chelsea’s summer transfer business

Whilst some Chelsea fans are already looking forward to some big name new arrivals in the summer, with the likes of Victor Osimhen linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, the reality is that the club may need to make a number of sales before they are in a position to buy anyone.

As things currently stand, unless Chelsea can generate substantial sums in pure profit before the end of June, they are in danger of breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.

And, not in the relatively minor way that saw Everton and Nottingham Forest both handed points deductions, but on a scale not seen before. And that means that, at some point in the future, there will come a reckoning, and they could be in line for a substantial points deduction.

And that is without taking into account the off balance sheet payments to the agents of Eden Hazard and Willian, among others, that occurred during the Roman Abramovich era, and which the club has already admitted to and acknowledged.
