Newcastle set to enter Ramsdale race

Newcastle United are set to enter the race to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who seems certain to leave the Emirates this summer.

The 25 year old was named in the Premier League team of the season last year, an signed a new Gunners’ contract in May. However, then Arsenal made the surprise decision to bring in David raya, initially on loan, and it did not take long for the Spaniard to supplant him as number one under Mikel Arteta.

The events of the past week have just cemented their relative places in the pecking order.

Picked against Brentford because Raya could not play against his parent club, Ramsdale made a terrible error which led to the concession of an equaliser. A few days later, Raya was the hero in the penalty hoot-out win over Porto in the Champions League.

Chelsea have been considered amongst the favourites to sign him at the end of the season, but Newcastle may enter the race now, although Ramsdale could find himself in the same situation.

The North-East club already have four goalkeepers, among them fellow England international Nick Pope.
