Chelsea to recruit specialist set-piece coach

Despite manager Mauricio Pochettino being an apparent sceptic, Chelsea are to recruit a specialist set-piece department.

The intention is for the department to operate across the entire club, and not just focus on the first-team.

If Chelsea want to understand the importance of set-pieces can be in a game of marginal gains, then they only need to look across town to the work that Nicolas Jover is doing at Arsenal.

The German was recruited by Mikel Arteta from his old club, Manchester City, where the pair had previously worked together, and has since turned the Gunners into the most effective Premier League team in the Premier League.

No side has scored more goals from corners than them, but his work extends to the other end of the pitch, where he is also responsible for organising the defence against dead ball situations.

That has proved to be something of an Achilles’ heel for Chelsea recently, as their League Cup final defeat to Liverpool illustrated.
