Chelsea could be forced into a fire sale

Chelsea could have to sell a number of players before the end of June in order to avoid falling foul of Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Industry experts have warned they may need to raise up to ₤100 million in profit by the end of June, or face sanctions which could include a points deduction for next season.

The club has embarked on a major spending spree since it was bought by the Todd Boehly led consortium, and, although the use of extended contracts and amortisation periods was used to defer the accounting impact of some of this expenditure – a loophole that has since been tightened – they are almost certainto breach the cap of allowable losses over a three year period.

The only way that they can avoid sanction is by raising funds from player sales, the drawback being that other clubs are aware of their financial predicament and will drive a hard bargain.
