Wembley defeat cast doubts on Pochettino’s future

Mauricio Pochettino’s future as Chelsea manager may be in some doubt after their defeat to Liverpool in the EFL Cup Final.

His side came within a few minutes of taking the game to a potential penalty shoot-out, and, had they won it, then they would have salvaged European football for themselves from what has been a difficult season so far.

However, although the claim of one well-known commentator that they “bottled” it against a Liverpool side depleted of many regular starters and full of academy kids was harsh, there is no doubt that the club’s owners are expecting a better return on their considerable outlay on the current squad.

A section of the Chelsea fan base have never accepted Pochettino as their manager anyway because of his past Tottenham connections, and the Argentine’s reign in West London could yet prove to be a brief one, with reports that Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is in the frame to succeed him.
