Tomiyasu agrees new long-term contract

Japanese international Takehiro Tomiyasu has agreed a new long-term contract with Arsenal.

His existing deal had 18 months to go, and there was speculation that he might be sold in the summer, amidst reports of interest from Bayern Munich.

However, the Gunners always wanted to keep him with Mikel Arteta a big fan of his versatility. He can play in either full-back position or as a centre-half.

He has made 20 appearances for the Gunners this season, although only one since December. He subsequently suffered a foot injury, and was then called up for Japan for the Asian Cup.

Although they have now been knocked out of that tournament by Iran, he was not back in time to be considered for the Premier League game against Liverpool at the weekend. Instead he should be available for their next game away at West Ham next Sunday.

The length of his new contract has not yet been disclosed.
