Maatsen close to Dortmund move

Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen is close to joining Borussia Dortmund.

The Dutch under-21 international rejected the chance to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer, preferring to fight for his place under Mauricio Pochettino.

But the period since then has been a frustrating one, and, whilst he finally made his Premier League debut for the West London club, his first-team minutes have been very limited. That is despite Chelsea activating a clause in his contract tying him to the club until 2025.

Maatsen was signed from PSV Eindhoven in 2018, but has spent much of the intervening period on loan – first with Charlton, then Coventry City, and most successfully last season with Burnley, who he helped win the Championship.

What has yet to be decided is the structure of the deal. Dortmund would prefer an initial loan with an option to buy in the summer, whereas Chelsea prefer a straight sale.
