The January transfer window

The January transfer window opens on 1st January, and will close on 1st February at 11 pm GMT.

To ensure harmonisation across Europe, all the major leagues will have the same starting and closing dates, whilst Saudi Arabia actually shut their window a day earlier.

Traditionally January is not as busy as the summer window. Clubs prefer to do most of their business when the preceding season has been completed, and they have a clear idea as to the gaps in their squads, which competitions they will be playing in next season, and also how much money they have to spend.

That does not mean that clubs will be idle either, however. There may be the need for reinforcements to cover for injuries and suspensions, and those chasing European places or bidding for Premier League survival may be looking for additions to help them reach their targets.

Chelsea have spent over ₤1 billion on transfers in the past three windows, but they are expected to among the most active clubs again, whilst a fresh assault on European teams is likely from the Saudi Pro League.
