Chelsea get FFP greenlight

Any concerns that Chelsea may be inhibited by concerns about FFP have been alleviated by the news that they are well within the guidelines.

That is because whilst the fact they have spent more than ₤1 billion on new players in the last three windows, there have been plenty of outgoings as well.

And the fact that many of the players they did sign were then placed on long contracts means that their cost can be amortised over a number of years (although the rules have subsequently been tightened), whereas any transfer fees for players sold can be booked immediately.

All this is good news for manager Mauricio Pochettino, with the club again expected to be among the biggest spenders in January, with a new striker and a long-term replacement for Thiago Silva among the priorities for the second half of the season.
