Gunners may trigger defender’s release clause

Arsenal are reported to be considering triggering the release clause of Portuguese defender Gonçalo Inácio, who currently plays for Sporting Lisbon.

Still just 22, he has been capped by Portugal at every age level from under-17 upwards, and made his full international debut earlier this year, and scored twice in their historic win over Liechenstein in their 2024 Euro qualifier, their biggest ever international victory.

The Gunners have an excellent defensive central pairing in the form of William Saliba and Gabriel, ss they head into the second half of the campaign.

They are fully aware of what happened last season, when an injury to Saliba undermined their title challenge, and they are looking for a quality replacement should the same thing happen again.

Takehiro Tomiyasu is an option, but he is currently injured, and will likely miss up ot six weeks with Japan at the Asia Cup. Jakub Kiwior is also available, but links of a loan move for him back to Italy persist.
