Chelsea want to sign German defender Jonathan Tah despite his profile not fitting their current transfer policy.
Under Todd Boehly, the club have tended to go for players under 25, whom they subsequently tie down to long-term contracts.
Tah, though, currently playing for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, is 27, and has a wealth of experience behind him.
However, with the hunt on now for a replacement for Thiago Silva, it is accepted that a player with more maturity may be needed to help shore up the Chelsea defence.
Silva at 39 is the oldest outfield player in the Premier League this season and although he has started every Premier League game under Mauricio Pochettino, the mistakes are beginning to mount up.
There are also suggestions that he wants to return to Brazil at the end of the season to see out the rest of his playing career.
