AC Milan vs Newcastle United preview, team news, tickets & prediction

It has been a contrasting start to the season for either side on the domestic front. AC Milan have started the season on fire, while Newcastle needed the September international break at the time to strategize and organize themselves for the season ahead.

After an active summer transfer window, AC Milan has made a great start to the season and is looking good to compete for the league title. As of the time of writing, the Rossoneri have won all three league games so far.

AC Milan kicked off the season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Bologna. Veteran striker Olivier Giroud played a part in both goals. He scored the first and ten minutes later he set up Christian Pulisic to double his side’s lead inside the opening 30 minutes of the game. In the first home game of the season, Giroud delivered once more, scoring a brace, while Theo Hernandez and Christian Pulisic added the other goals in a 4-1 comfortable win over Torino.

A statement result came for Stefan Pioli and Milan just before the international break when they defeated AS Roma 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. Giroud scored for the consecutive game as Milan held on for another crucial win.

On the other hand, Newcastle has been off since the start of the season. The Magpies opened the season with an emphatic 5-1 bashing of Aston Villa. Since then, they have struggled to pick points, suffering defeats to Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton respectively. It is a far cry from how they ended the season last term, especially as they were considered to be dark horses for the current campaign.

It has not helped that the Magpies have been placed in what can be tagged as an entirely difficult group for all teams involved. A trio of PSG, AC Milan, and Borussia Dortmund to contend with will be trouble for any side, talkless of a Newcastle side that is low on confidence at the moment. It would be interesting to see how they fare in the group but perhaps their first game against Milan will give a glimpse of what is to come.

This will be their first-ever meeting and it promises to be an interesting one to behold. However, AC Milan has won just one of their last 11 matches against English sides (two draws and eight losses). Regardless, they will fancy their chances against a Newcastle side that has been out of the Champions League for a while.

The Rossoneri have won their only game at home this season, while Newcastle have lost every game on the road this campaign. Milan also won their last two games in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb and RB Salzburg.

Newcastle played some compact football last season and it got them to this stage but it has not been working for them in the past couple of games. Eddie Howe, fresh from the international break, will be keen to see his side impress and do some great things at the San Siro on Tuesday evening.

Any point at all will be crucial in this group. Whoever can take hold of early points in this match-up will hold the upper hand in qualification from what is arguably the most difficult Champions League group of the 2023/24 campaign.

Match tickets

The match at the San Siro kicks off on Tuesday 19th September, at 5:45 pm UK time and it will be shown live on BeIN Sports, with coverage starting from around 5 PM.

Newcastle’s return to the elite competition promises to be an exciting one and the magnificent stadium in Milan is a perfect place to host that. Par for the course, Newcastle should have their fans drumming their support for them in this game.

AC Milan had a fine run in the UEFA Champions League last season only to lose out to city rivals, Inter in the semifinals. Getting tickets for AC Milan vs Newcastle tickets will be difficult given the standard of the game and the country the opposition is coming from. Hence, you are advised to search ticket reselling sites should they be expectedly sold out on each club’s channels.

Team news

AC Milan has been solid this season and it has shown in their opening results so far. The Italians played a 4-3-3 formation with Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic starting on either side of Olivier Giroud.

A winning team might not witness a whole lot of changes. Going by that, the likes of Samuel Chukwueze and Noah Okafor might settle for a place on the bench once again. Pierre Kalulu and Ismael Bennacer are both ruled out from the match.

AC Milan: Maignan; Calabria, Thiaw, Tomori, Hernandez; Loftus-Cheek, Krunic, Reijnders; Pulisic, Giroud, Leao.

Newcastle have kept almost the same set of players for most of their games this season despite poor results. Sandro Tonali, who makes an immediate return to Milan, and Bruno Guimaraes are expected to partner in the middle of the park.

Nick Pope should also continue in goal, while Callum Wilson could be favored in attack ahead of Alexander Isak. Meanwhile, Sven Botman, Javier Manquillo, and Emil Krafth are doubts about the game.

Newcastle United: Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Targett; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Gordon.

AC Milan are unbeaten at home, while Newcastle have been poor on the road this season, losing both games. Giroud, who is doubtful for the game, is one man the Newcastle defense will have to be wary about if he gets to play. The former Arsenal man has scored in every game this season and has scored the opening goal in two of those three games.

Newcastle have won just two of their last nine away Champions League games and their current form doesn’t suggest they can improve that win percentage.
