It appeared that left back Ian Maatsen’s days at Stamford Bridge were numbered.
That was after the club agreed a deal to sell him to Burnley, the club with whom he enjoyed a successful loan spell in the Championship with last season.
In the end, though, he rejected the opportunity to make the switch, preferring to stay and fight for his place at the West London club.
And he was rewarded by coming off the bench against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League at the weekend.
However, with his current contract set to expire next summer, he has now been given a warning by the club.
Sign a new deal or be placed on the transfer list in January.
Although highly rated by Mauricio Pochettino, there are a number of left-backs at the club, and they almost signed another one in the form of Antonio Nusa from Club Brugge, but that was contingent on Maatsen leaving the club.
