Chelsea have lost out on their main summer transfer target, Moises Caicedo.
The West London had seen a number of offers to buy the Ecuadorean midfielder rejected, the most recent of which was for around £80 million, with his current club Brighton repeatedly indicating that it did not match their valuation of the player.
However, seemingly out of left field, Liverpool have agreed to buy him for £110 million, which will be a new record fee paid for a Premier League player, exceeding the £105 million that the move of Declan Rice from West Ham to Arsenal earlier this summer may eventually reach.
Liverpool had seen their defensive midfield option drastically reduced with the loss of both Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to the Saudi Pro League earlier in the window, and now they are gambling on tje Ecuadorean to fill the gap.
And that is a major blow to Chelsea, who have their own issues in that area of the pitch to address.
Caicedo could now make his debut for his new club against Chelsea with the pair meeting in the Premier League on Sunday.
