Chelsea want to re-sign former player Tino Lavramento from relegated Southampton.
The West London club sold him to the Saints for a fee of £5 million two years ago, although the deal did include a buy-back clause which has now become active.
Newcastle have already expressed their interest in buying the 20 year old defender this summer, but they have seen two bids, one for £12 million and an improved offer of £21 million rejected.
Southampton are reported to want £38 million for a player who was one of their bright lights last season in what was otherwise a disappointing campaign.
Lavramento came through the academy system at Chelsea, and was their academy player of the year in the 2020 – 2021 season. He featured on the bench in several Premier League fixtures, without ever getting on the pitch.
He has been capped by England at every age group up to and including under-21 level.
