Arsenal have lodged a bid to sign defender Jurrien Timber from Ajax.
The Dutch international has made 121 appearances for the Amsterdam club, primarily as a entre-back, although he has featured as a right-back as well.
The Gunners have submitted an opening offer of £30 million, although this is likely to be rejected, with the Eredivisie club valuing him at almost twice that.
However, talks are continuing, and it is hoped that a compromise can be reached.
Personal terms are not expected to be an issue with the 22-year old.
Arsenal are looking to add more defensive cover, aware that the injury to William Saliba helped ot derail their title challenge last season. And having lost Takehiro Tomiyasu at the same time as the Frenchman, more options are needed on the right side of defence.
Timber may not be a guaranteed starter, but, with the Gunners back in the Champions League next season, there will be plenty of football to go around.
