Arsenal have begun talks about a contract extension with Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka.
Xhaka joined the club from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016, and was made captain under Unai Emery.
However, his time in North London looked like it would come to a dramatic end after he was substituted in a game against Crystal Palace, storming off the pitch and throwing the captain’s armband to the turf.
He was also set to join Hertha Berlin, but new manager Mikel Arteta persuaded him to stay and he has since completely rehabilitated his reputation with the club’s supporters.
The 30 year old wants to stay at the Emirates, where his influence in the dressing room has become important for what remains a largely young team.
Fellow midfielder Mohammed Elneny penned his own contract extension last week.
